Is Being an Ethical Episcopalian Enough?

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Sharon Serot Once a month I take my children to a food pantry to do volunteer work. On this particular Sunday we were stocking shelves with a group of Episcopalian Youth. I knew this because each of them was wearing an Episcopal shield lapel pin. Seeing these kids really lifted my spirits. Usually its adults who work in the food pantry and that can become pretty boring for my kids. Now they had the opportunity to work with students their own age. While separating out cans from boxed goods, my son Drew entered into a very interesting conversation with a young man, Henry, who appeared to be about 16 years old. Drew and Henry became fast friends and worked together throughout the morning. When we were finished with our work, we got in the car and on the ride home, he started to share bits and pieces of his morning conversation with Henry. You know, Henry is not so sure if he believes in God, my son informed me. This information kind of caught me off balance. Isnt Henry a member of the Episcopal Youth Group that came to volunteer at the food pantry? I asked confused. Yup, he said, but that really has nothing to do with his volunteering. He does it because he thinks its the right way to do things, he says he does it because he feels its the right thing to do. Now, I believe that part of being a good Episcopalian is being a good person, no question. But thats not the whole ball of wax! There are Christians who claim to be ethical people but who would not necessarily consider themselves to be religious. So my question is, what is their source for goodness? What does an ethical Episcopalian use as the litmus test for good, if not the scriptures? If goodness is defined by the individual, then it follows that morality can also be defined by the individual and thats dangerous. That can lead us down that slippery slope where what I think becomes sacred. Henrys discussion with my son ended up being a real opportunity for our family. It allowed us to explore our own concerns and perceptions on the importance of an ethical framework thats God- based. Imagine how much infinitely deeper Henrys acts of kindness would be if he were sensitized to not only the physical results of his being a good Samaritan, but the spiritual ramifications as well. 5 Tips To Getting Your Ex Back

Monday, May 26th, 2008

By Natalie Arton At some point of our life, we put an end to the relationship, only to realize that we made a mistake by losing the person that we love. If youve found yourself in such situation, you have only two possible choices: give up on this relationship and move on with your life or start fighting for your love. No matter which variant did you chose you still have to figure out why this has happened? Analyze where the problem was and address it. This will prevent you from repeating same mistakes in the future, whether you decide to stay with your ex or start a new life with a different partner. If you have decided that you want to save your relationship, there some useful tips to getting your ex back. 1. First of all, I want you to understand that if you split with your ex there was a big problem or a combination of different problems that led to a breakup. Any problem requires solution. It is not enough to go to your ex and tell him/her that you are sorry and you understand what you have done wrong. You have to prove him/her that this relationship deserves a second chance by showing what can be done. 2. Getting back together, as well as staying together requires a conscious effort. You can start by improving yourself and becoming a better person that your ex can fall in love again. Cultivate the qualities that your beloved one is attracted to. 3. Dont act too clingy or desperate around your ex, even if you truly miss him or her. It is not going to help. You have to accept full responsibility for your own happiness, by becoming and independent and strong person. If you make another person the center of the Universe and lay your happiness in his/her hands, you lose control over your life. Without getting your power back you cant change or affect the current situation. 4. After you have acquired a full control, start romancing the person that you love all over again. Awake you exs interest to you, by doing things he/she never thought you are capable of, like quitting smoking or going to the opera or signing up for Chinese language course. Make sure, that you are enjoying your life to the fullest, instead of sitting at home and sulking with hurt. 5. When you will get your former boyfriend/girlfriend back, make this relationship a priority in your life. Otherwise in a few months you might return to this article, hoping to win your ex back once again. Consultants - If We Can’t Laugh At Ourselves?

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

By Dennis Schooley There are hundreds of varieties of Consultants these days. We can find Consultants to take care of our diets, our physical well being, our mental well being, and pretty much anything you can imagine when it comes to business. The story below might just indicate that we take ourselves a little too seriously sometimes. A shepherd was herding his flock in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand new Beemer advanced out of the dust clouds towards him. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses, and a Zegna tie, leaned out his window and asked the shepherd, If I can tell you exactly how many sheep you have in your flock, will you give me one? The shepherd looked at the man, then looked at his peacefully grazing flock, and calmly answered, Sure. The yuppie parked his car, whipped out his IBM ThinkPad, connected it to a cell phone, and surfed to a NASA page on the Internet. He called up a GPS satellite navigation system, scanned the area, and then opened both a database, and an Excel spreadsheet with complex macro formulas. He then sent an email on his Blackberry, and after a few minutes he received a response. Finally, he prints out a 150-page report on his hi-tech miniaturized printer in the car, then turns to the shepherd and says, You have exactly 1623 sheep. That is correct, take one of the sheep said the shepherd. He then watches the young man select one of the animals and bundle it into his car. Then the shepherd says, If I can tell you exactly what you do for a living, will you give me back my beast? O.K., why not? answered the man. Clearly youre a consultant sad the shepherd. Thats correct, says the yuppie, but how did you guess that? No guessing required, answered the shepherd. You turned up here, although nobody called you. You want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked, and you dont know a thing about my business. Now give me back my dog. The lesson seems to be to keep my Consulting assignment to the things I know about. I think Im safe because sheep scare me. A house is not a Home without a Gnome

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Hugh Harris-Evans When confronted by a garden gnome the common reaction is to hold up your hands in horror and utter an expression of disgust while wondering how anyone can bear to allow such a creature to remain in their backyard. On the other hand we are told on good authority that the gnome population of Southern Germany is close on four million and, when you start looking, there are quite a number visible in the US. Perhaps we should not be surprised by the Germans since gnomes were first created in their country in the early 1800’s. The earliest recorded sighting in England was in 1840 at Lamport Hall, the seat of Sir Charles Isham. It was not until 1872 that gnomes for the garden began to be manufactured in large numbers. According to German folklore gnomes were regarded as good luck charms. They were supposed to help around the house and garden and in rural areas often lived in the rafters of barns where they would keep a watchful eye on the owner’s animals as well as the crops and garden produce. Over the years the German gnome makers honed their skills and became master craftsmen. At its peak the Griebel gnome factory in East Germany produced some 300 different gnome characters. Following the collapse of communism in 1989 entrepreneurs in the Czech Republic decided to enter the market and to produce cheap imitations of the traditional characters. Initially they were prevented from entering Germany by a law which allowed customs to confiscate those gnomes infringing companies’ copyright. However, now it is a free for all on the German border and Reinhard Griebel, the great grandson of the founder of the firm, has just one workshop and the gnome museum. Whilst the original gnomes were depicted as gardeners engaged in the traditional rural tasks, the range was increased to include anyone from fishermen to musicians, sportsmen and farmers. It was not long before living individuals were being modelled in clay or stoneware. Among those currently available are gladiator Russell Crowe, TV gardeners Alan Titchmarsh and Charlie Dimmock and even a Tony Blair wall plaque. For gnome lovers no trip to Europe would be complete without a visit to the Gnome Reserve set in the wilds of northern Devon in England. There you will find over one thousand gnomes and pixies in the four acre reserve. Gnome hats are loaned free of charge together with fishing rods, so you don’t embarrass the gnomes! There are some who view the cheerful little character sitting in your yard in a different light. FreeTheGnomes.com provides Garden Gnome Liberation information and calls to action. They proclaim that “Thousands of Gnomes are enslaved in Gardens across America. For too long we have let our neighbors usurp the rights of these gentle woodland creatures. Join our boycott. Organize a picket demonstration. Write to Congress. Free a Gnome. We’ll show you how.” Some groups have taken the law into their own hands. In April 2000 in Paris the dormant Garden Gnome Liberation Front sprang back to life, stealing about 20 gnomes during a nighttime raid on a Paris exhibition. “We demand … that garden gnomes are no longer ridiculed and that they be released into their natural habitat,” the Front’s Paris wing said in a statement following its weekend strike. Disappearing gnomes have caused headaches for police forces worldwide. In May 2004 The Scotsman reported that a spate of bizarre thefts had left Lothians police with several unusual prisoners - 14 garden gnomes. An elderly woman complained to police that someone was stealing gnomes from her yard in Fairfax County, Washington D.C. Officers set up a spy-cam and caught their suspect in the act four times. Police revealed that their bad guy was really a not-so-bad Labrador retriever named Magnum. The dog had been retrieving the figurines and bringing them home. In Australia, garden gnomes started disappearing from one particular neighbourhood on a large scale. They were found in a clearing in the bush months later, where they were all gathered around the largest gnome, having a meeting. If you have not yet succumbed to the temptation to acquire one of these cheerful little creatures, let me leave you with one final thought. A study carried out in England in 2003 into matters to be considered when selling your home found that having a gnome in your front garden reduced the value of your house by $840. Natural Headache Relief: 3 Top at Home Relief Methods

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

By Lyne Doxley If you are one of those people who have a preference for more natural and alternative means of pain relief as opposed to the more traditional methods, rest assured- there are plenty of alternatives for you to choose from. In fact, the methods used in natural headache relief are considered superior by many, as the taking of certain headache medications can not only be addictive but can also cause even more headaches than you had to begin with; thus the term rebound headache. There are multiple different methods on offer that you can use if youre looking for natural headache relief. Depending on your personal preference and on what would work best in your own specific situation, it is not hard to find natural headache relief that will completely work for you. Aromatherapy One of the most usual natural headache relief methods is aromatherapy, which is used to promote relaxation and to relieve both stress and pain. Aromatherapy is a treatment mode which entails the use of aromatic compounds and essential oils in order to positively impact an individuals mood and/or health. The basic materials involved in aromatherapy are: essential oils, infusions, absolutes, hydrosols, phytoncides, and carrier oils. Herbs Herbs are one of the most essential factors in aromatherapy, and some of the herbs that are considered as being most effective in relieving headaches are:; cinnamon, believed to reduce stress and help to loosen tight muscles; lime essence, which is helpful in reducing anxiety; chamomile, which is calming and soothing, lavender, which helps reduce pain and relaxes; marjoram, which helps to ease muscle tension; peppermint, which reduces both pain and tension; and valerian, which reduces tension and pain. Acupressure And how can we forget acupressure related techniques involving pressure points, of which you can even do yourself at home. The technique itself is considered amazingly effective for almost all types of headaches, and only takes about 5-10 minutes. Essentially what you do is, using your thumbs, you gently massage the points that are located at your temples, and do this for about a minute, increasing the pressure as you like, but remember to never do it too hard, as the basic point is to barely touch the skin. No matter what methods you eventually decide to try, learning about all of the options that are available is itself important, not only so that you are knowledgeable on the matter but also so that you can try various methods and discover which is the best for you and your own circumstances. How to Measure the Benefit Your Product or Service Offers

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By Joe Love Measuring the benefit of your product or service means putting a specific value on the advantage it offers. For example, its ineffective to say your light bulbs are brighter and last longer than the competitions. Youve got to let people know that theyre 50% brighter and last two times as long! Your dry cleaning methods arent just better, theyre three times more likely to remove stubborn stains than traditional methods. Your chiropractic techniques arent just effective, theyre clinically proven to reduce back pain for 95% of patients. And so on. The more specific you are about the superior performance, benefit, or advantage of your product or service, the more successful your marketing message will be, regardless of the medium you use. The reason is simple: Consumers hear claims of product superiority all the time. Theyve become immune. Theyve learned to tune out this generic fluff. But a specific claim carries much more weight. It gives credibility to your arguments. It resonates with the potential purchaser and makes your claim stand out from the rest. Think about it. All other things being equal, if you’re buying a product or a service and one does very little for you and one does seemingly two or three times more for you, which one are you going to buy? The choice is simple. But how do you measure the value of your product or service? Start by examining what goes into your product or service. If you are not the manufacturer or creator of it, you must go to whomever is, you must go to the source. Ask them to share with you all their data, all the clinical, technical, research, testing, and compatibility data they may have accumulated on the product or service in application. You need to focus on three things: 1. What was the product engineered to do and why? 2. What components went into it to assure that it would perform? 3. What process did they go through to create the product or service? In other words, if the purpose of a manufacturers pipe is to transport fluid underground and last for 30 years, what makes the manufacturer think it will do that? Well, they probably tested it. They probably manufactured it with material that was corrosion-proof and resistant to freezing under temperatures far below zero. Youve got to find out all those factors. In addition, youve got to analyze the process that was necessary to create the product or service. For example, if you own a clothing store, perhaps you traveled 20 times around the country and attended over 60 different trade shows to find the best merchandise, or get the best values for your customers. Perhaps you looked at 150 separate manufacturing lines to be able to choose 25 that were unique and fashionable enough to be sold in your store. Once you have analyzed what went into the creation or production of the your product or service, the next thing you want to do is ask, How does it compare against the competition. For example, if you are offering a suit thats $500 and a competitor is offering a suit thats $500 But yours is made with 25% silk If that difference is something that adds value, you should say so. Remember, however, that its very important to translate value into an end-result benefit for your customer. In other words, dont just say that because the suit is made of 25% silk it is better. That may be true but unless your customer is a tailor, Its a meaningless claim. You have to explain to your customer that the 25% silk content will make the suit hold its shape better, respond to dry cleaning better, last an average of 50% longer for the same amount of money. Dont sell the features for any reason other than for their logical connection to a benefit or a result. The only reason features are even relevant is because they are a conduit, or a bridge for you to take the customer over to reach a bottom-line benefit. For example, if youre selling flat screen or plasma televisions, what is the ultimate benefit? The benefit may be four times more clarity or four times more realistic picture than any other screen you can buy for up to twice the money. Youve got to look at it that way, translating the feature into a tangible benefit for the customer. When comparing your product or service to your competitors, according to customer survey results, the most effective comparisons deal with performance. The second most effective factor is composition, the components, elements, or ingredients. This is followed by the process that went into creating it, and lastly, the design or standards on which its based. Although, these survey results apply most directly to products it also applies to services as well. For example, an accountant, may promote that he or she will save you 45% off of your annual tax bill which is the most effective (performance). Slightly less effective would be a claim that he or she would focus on 12 specific deductions that are often overlooked (composition). And even less effective would be if the accountant states that he or she has more than 400 hours of continuing education thereby keeping up on the latest accounting techniques (process). Never overlook the value that your existing customers can give you. Interview them in person or in phone. You can have them complete questionnaires in the customer only section of your Web site or simply e-mail a customer questionnaire to them. Explain to them that you want to know how your product or service performs in their own personal experience. In the interview or the questionnaire start off by taking them back to a time before they were using your product or service, when they were using either an alternative or nothing at all. Find out what it was like for them. The best part of getting information directly from you customers, is that, in the process, you are going to get excited about the value, benefit, and meaning you make in a customers life. And as you get more excited, you are going to sell with more certainty, conviction, and passion. Youre going to realize, maybe for the first time, that your product or service adds enormous, tangible, and measurable meaning to someones life. The sooner you measure the value and benefits of your product or service, the sooner your bottom line will begin to skyrocket! Copyright 2005 by Joe Love and JLM & Associates, Inc.
