The Opportunity Lesson

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Daniel Belcher An opportunity is a chance or an opening in which we might be compelled to take some kind of action or make a movement towards something we desire. We are provided with many opportunities doing our daily activities. We will normally only act or take opportunities which are familiar to us. Opportunities provide us with a chance for change because taking opportunities provides a door towards greater growth. The more we look for opportunities, the more openings we will find. Looking for opportunities will give us more chances for greater change to take place in our lives.Seeing a greater number of opportunities will help us to take the best course of action. So, it is our job to be aware of our many doors of opportunity that present themselves. When opportunities presents themselves to us, we must first evaluate the risks involved. If some people have determined the risk is to high; they will hesitate to take that particular opportunity. If an opportunity presents little risk to exposure or harm, we will readily move in such cases. Everyone has a different risk level during their evaluation process. We must all evaluate the risk that we are willing to take for our own selves. Our solutions have to be seen in the opportunities that life gives us. We often look to see what will be the end result of certain opportunities. Even though, sometimes the end result of an opportunity cannot be seen; it can only be perceived. We may decide that the chance is still worth the risk. The more opportunities we see in life, the more end results we can be perceived. Opportunities require that we make or take some action to activate the process. We can think about opportunities all day long, but if we take no action in this process, the opportunities in life will continue to pass us by. We need to have the strength and fortitude to make the required actions or movements. If we have no strength, than we have no action. The optimum situation is for us to have the strength to make the necessary action towards our many life opportunities. Opportunities are something that we all have to watch for in life. We have to realize that there are varying degrees of risk in all opportunities. We need to have the drive to move forward when our chances appear. Too many opportunities in life pass us by; we have to be ready for opportunities call. We must make the best out of every opportunity. Our opportunities are similar to the wind, ever changing and ever present. Hairstyles for Round Face Shapes - What Hair Styles Will Suit Your Round Face Best

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Ladi Lashkari If you are like many women out there and have been gifted a round face, there are specific hairstyles for round face shapes that will make you look more beautiful. But before we proceed to give you hairstyle ideas, here’s an important question… Are you sure you have a round face? To make sure that you are going to get your best look with these hairstyle tips, it’s important that you first make sure you have a round face. One simple way is to put your hair into a ponytail and go in front of the mirror. Then draw the outline of your face on the mirror with a lip stick around your face. Then step back and see what shape it is more similar to. Here is a list of face shapes to help you see which one your face drawing is more similar to… OvalRoundLongHeartSquareDiamond Another great technique to see if your face is really round is to ask other people like your friends or family members to guess your face shape. Since they will have an outsider’s look, they can say more accurately. OK, so now that you are sure you have a round face, let’s see what kind of hair style will look best on you… The best hairstyles that will look good on you are those that add length to your face. A long straight hair is a good idea because long hair will make your face look longer, and since it’s straight it will make your head width show less. So what if your hair is not straight and it’s curly? Then a long hairstyle will still look good on you. You may want to use a hair straightener like the popular Sedu flat iron to make your hair straight sometimes. Here you can see some beautiful Sedu hairstyles for straight hair. Another good hairstyle idea that will look perfect on round faces is a long hairstyle with curly ends because it will add width to the bottom of your face and make the width disappear. Also an easy way to find beautiful hairstyles for round face is to see which celebrity has a round face and then search for that celebrity’s hairstyles pictures. Since celebrities frequently try different hairstyles, you can easily find a collection of good round face hairstyles this way. You can see which hair styles fits her face most and then try it on yourself. But at the end, remember it’s YOU and only you who decides which hairstyle you feel most comfortable in, and that it the hairstyle that will also look most beautiful on you. If you like a hairstyle that doesn’t fit the rules outlined here, it doesn’t matter. Because when you like your hairstyle and feel good in it, all the rest goes away because this confidence and inner beauty will shine through your face and you will look more beautiful than ever. Wish you the best of luck in choosing your hair style! Materialism - Immaterial Or Not?

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Michael Russell We are daily reminded by the media of our growing materialism which will eventually, if you believe the media, be our downfall. Certainly there are people whose only ambition is to acquire more and more possessions as an end in itself, which obviously denotes greed and insecurity and benefits no one. These accusations of materialism are, in many respects, quite insulting to the average person, (if such there is) and need analysing. So called ‘materialism’ often stems from people who grew up with little or no ‘mod cons’, and made their lives more comfortable. As a result they are unjustly singled out for improving their standard of living simply because it involved spending money on much needed possessions and improvements. There is little virtue in waking up on an icy winter morning without hot water, central heating and windows frozen inside and out. Years ago there were no fitted carpets to take the chill off and I can remember, as a child, my teeth literally chattering with cold. My father, who suffered from bronchitis couldn’t have had a much worse start to the day. Wealthy people did, of course, have servants to light the fires and prepare breakfast but to the man in the street these people might as well have lived on another planet. Thousands of women were simply drudges for most of their lives (a few still are today) and before the advent of washing machines, fridge/freezers, central heating, food processors, dish washers etc., there was precious little time or money for leisure and very few people owned cars. Once these luxury items began being mass produced there was a real incentive for people to work to obtain these specialist goods. These products are now the norm in most households and include telephones, television, cars, videos, C.D. and D.V.D. players, computers and mobile phones. People began to realise that, with more time for leisure, life could actually be enjoyed as opposed to being one long daily grind. In addition advanced medical facilities also improved people’s standard of living. Suddenly people’s expectations of life were greatly increased. All this was due to so called ‘materialism’ which gave people a whole new outlook and pleasure in life. Prior to this, the majority of people were content if they could just have shelter, food and warmth - the same requirements of the animals. This ‘materialism’ has in fact, freed people from daily drudgery and afforded them a lifestyle never dreamed of in their grandparents’ day. The time for criticism will be when material possessions are the only reason for existence. We are, I believe, a long way from that day and I, personally, am eternally grateful for enjoying a quality of life not available to my parents. Today ‘materialism’ is often just another word for what used to be known as ‘keeping up with the Jones’s’, i.e. wanting something someone else has just for the sake of it, not because you need it. It’s very much the same with cars. Joe Public down the road has just traded in his car for a new one so you immediately begin to think that you too must change yours. Why, for Heaven’s sake, when your own is running perfectly well? These accusations of materialism are, of course, fuelled by the press and television, the very same media which pulls out all the stops to persuade us , by advertising, that we will not be happy unless or until we have that new lawnmower, C.D. player, car, new kitchen or that exotic holiday. We are bombarded morning, noon and night by advertisements doing their utmost to ensure we become the materialistic society of which we are accused. There is nothing virtuous in making people feel they will not be happy until they acquire certain possessions, in addition to the fact that many people cannot afford them. Unfortunately, people are easily influenced and some will succumb to the temptations brandished in front of them, night after night, with unremitting tenacity. The majority of people have enough sense not to be tempted into buying things they cannot afford and are content with the creature comforts they have. There are thousands of people who derive tremendous pleasure from their gardens and will spend hours cultivating them. Other people enjoy walking for hours in the countryside, hill climbing, a game of bridge, fishing, a trip to the library, swimming, playing tennis, painting, cooking a special meal, planning a picnic or barbeque, drama, reading a particularly good book or inviting friends round for the evening. None of these activities cost very much but they give people hours of pleasure and, in many cases, allow them to interact with each other. It should be emphasised that there is nothing at all to be ashamed of in taking holidays abroad, owning a car, wearing good clothes or acquiring a home and all that goes with it. Having a warm comfortably furnished home is something to be proud of and obviously involves spending money to achieve this. So, please, do not allow the media to make you feel guilty because you take pleasure in your home, sentimental possessions, your car or a lovely holiday. Most of you take enormous pleasure and pride in your children and many of you are wonderful friends to your neighbours, being there for them in times of need. The spiritual, aesthetic and emotional sides of life are far from extinct. Fast Food Weight Loss - Is Eating At McDonald’s The New Path To Weight Loss?

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Tracie Johanson Is eating at McDonalds the new path to weight loss? Can fast food burgers, fries and sodas fit into your diet and weight loss program? For years, the answer has been a resounding NO. But lately, Wendys, Burger King and many other fast food chains have made changes to help consumers stick to a healthy diet. Why have fast food companies finally started to pay attention to healthier food choices? Simply stated, because its good for business. Americans are trying everything from the newest weight loss pill to Weight Watchers to lose their extra fat, spending ..more than $40 billion in 2004 on weight control pills, gym memberships, diet plans and related foods, estimates Marketdata Enterprises, which studies the weight loss industry (Source: cnn.com; 1-14-2005). Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that 80 percent of overweight individuals and almost 87 percent of obese individuals are trying to lose or maintain their weight. Any fast foods company thats paying attention to public sentiment and trends has made changes to make their menu more palatable to the health and fitness enthusiast. McDonalds, long an industry leader, has made tremendous strides in this area culminating in their recent announcement that all fast food packaging will soon include nutritional information. But have they gone far enough? -> Fast Food = Fat Food: No matter how many healthy new products are introduced onto the fast food menu boards, the problem is that their core products are high in fat and calories. Consider these typical meals from McDonalds: * Big Mac, Large Fries, Large Coca-Cola, Hot Fudge Sundae =1,730 calories, 99% of daily fat, 108% of daily saturated fat, 86% of daily carbohydrates * Chicken Selects Breast Strips (5 pc), Large Fries, Large Coke, McFlurry with M+Ms Candies (12 oz.) =2,290 calories, 151% of daily fat, 131% of daily saturated fat, 100% of daily carbohydrates * Bacon Ranch Salad/Crispy Chicken, Newmans Ranch Dressing, Large Coke, McFlurry Oreo (12 oz.) =1,390 calories, 73% of daily fat, 81% of daily saturated fat, 69% of daily carbohydrates (Source: mcdonalds.com) Some consumers, in an attempt to reduce the number of calories and fat theyre eating, have opted for salads instead of traditional burgers and fries. Unfortunately, some fast food salads are almost as bad for us as a Big Mac. A California Cobb salad with Newmans Own Cobb Dressing from McDonalds, for example, boasts 490 calories and 42% of your daily fat. Compare that to a Big Mac, which has 560 calories and 47% of your recommended daily fat. Although chastised in the movie SuperSize Me, McDonalds isnt alone in offering high calories foods. The Original Whopper with Cheese from Burger King will cost you 800 calories and 49 grams of fat. Make that a Double Whopper with Cheese and youll consume an incredible 1,060 calories and 69 grams of fat. The Big Bacon Classic from Wendys is better with 580 calories and 29 grams of fat, while the Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger from Jack In The Box is the highest on the list with 1,094 calories and a tremendous 78 grams of fat. Clearly, high calorie fast food has become a problem. With approximately 65% of Americans classified as overweight, people are pointing fingers of blame. In a lawsuit filed in 2002, two Bronx teenagers accused McDonald’s of making them fat by serving them highly processed food that affected their health. A judge tossed out the case a year later, but an appeals court reinstated part of the suit earlier this year, according to published reports. (Source: cnn.com; 10-20-2005). McDonalds isnt the only chain being accused of making people fat. A New York City lawyer has filed suit against the four big fast-food corporations, saying their fatty foods are responsible for his clients obesity and related health problems. Samuel Hirsch filed his lawsuit Wednesday at a New York state court in the Bronx, alleging that McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys and KFC Corporation are irresponsible and deceptive in the posting of their nutritional information, that they need to offer healthier options on their menus, and that they create a de facto addiction in their consumers (Source: foxnews.com; 7-24-2002). The fast food industry initially responded by arguing that customers have a choice of what to order when going to a restaurant. “It’s senseless, baseless and ridiculous,” National Restaurant Association spokeswoman Katharine Kim said. “There are choices in restaurants and people can make these choices, and there’s a little personal responsibility as well.” (Source: foxnews.com; 7-24-2002). Our elected officials seem to agree with that assessment. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill Wednesday that would block lawsuits by people who blame fast-food chains for their obesity. The cheeseburger bill, as it has been dubbed in Congress, stems from class-action litigation that accused McDonald’s of causing obesity in children (Source: cnn.com; 10-20-2005). This bill is not yet law, having passed the House but not yet the Senate. In the last Congress a similar bill passed the House, but the Senate never acted on it. About 20 states have laws similar to the cheeseburger bill. -> Fast Food Makes A Change: To their credit, McDonalds and some others in the fast food industry have made changes to their menu making it easier for us to stick to our diet program or weight loss plan. McDonalds allows consumers to substitute Apple Dippers with Caramel Dip for the french fries in their meal, cutting calories from 350 to 100 and reducing fat from 16 grams all the way down to 1 gram (comparison vs. medium fries). McDonalds also allows a no-cost substitution of 1% milk instead of a Coke, further cutting caloric intake by 50 calories and boosting protein and calcium (comparison vs. small Coke Classic). Upon request, Burger King now provides Motts Strawberry Flavored Applesauce in place of french fries which will save you 270 calories and 18 grams of fat (comparison vs. medium fries). Wendys will honor customer requests to substitute mandarin oranges for french fries, sparing you a belt-busting 360 calories and 21 grams of fat (comparison vs. medium fries). Not only are the fast food giants allowing healthier substitutions, but they have also added a selection of fairly nutritious menu options. McDonalds new Fruit & Walnut Salad has only 310 calories and 13 grams of fat, while their Fruit & Yogurt Parfait boasts 160 calories and 2 grams of fat. In some markets Burger King is offering a Veggie Burger that has only 340 calories and 8 grams of fat when you order it without the mayonnaise. Now McDonalds has given consumers looking for fast weight loss another tool: easy to read and easy to find nutritional labels. In the past, customers wanting to find nutrition facts on their fast food choices either had to search in the restaurant for a hard-to-find poster or go online. Now, in what is being called a bold move, McDonalds is planning to put these nutritional facts right where theyre easiest to find on the product wrapper itself. McDonald’s Corp. customers will soon know that the Big Mac they bought contains almost half their recommended daily fat intake just by looking at the wrapper. In its latest measure to fend off critics that blame the world’s largest restaurant company for contributing to rising incidents of obesity and other health problems, McDonald’s said it will start printing nutritional information on the packaging of its food (Source: cnn.com; 10-26-2005). McDonalds is to be commended for their efforts to educate their customers. This new informative label goes a long way towards answering nutritional concerns. Expected to be in most stores by the end of 2006, the new labels will include the amount of the nutrient (calories, fat, protein, etc.) and the percentage of the daily recommended intake, based on a 2,000 calorie diet. -> Is It Enough? The fast food industry has heard the public asking for healthier options and more nutritional information, and they have responded. But it is enough? McDonalds and others still sell high calorie and high fat products, and we shouldnt expect those to disappear anytime soon. In our free market, as long as there is a demand there will be someone with a supply. Data from USDAs food intake surveys show that the food-away-from-home sector provided 32 percent of total food energy consumption in 1994-96, up from 18 percent in 1977-78. The data also suggest that, when eating out, people either eat more or eat higher calorie foodsor bothand that this tendency appears to be increasing (Source: usda.gov). Even with more information at their fingertips, there is some doubt that consumers will actually use that information to make healthier choices. Consider the limited impact from warning labels on cigarettes and alcohol packaging; despite such dire warnings, people still use these products. There is evidence that Americans will continue to eat what they want, no matter how much information they have available to them. According to a 2000 Roper Reports survey of a nationally representative sample of 2,000 Americans 18 or older, the percentage of Americans who say they are eating “pretty much whatever they want” was at an all-time high of 70 percent in 2000, up from 58 percent in 1997 (Source: usda.gov). The question of is it enough seems to be misdirected. Instead of asking the fast food industry to do more to educate the public and offer healthy options, perhaps what we as a country should do is ask ourselves if the information we have right now is enough. If we look for it, is there enough health, fitness and nutritional information out there to help us make the right dietary choices? As uncomfortable as it may be for some, the answer to this question is probably yes. -> The Overlooked Answer: All too often, when participating in a discussion of diet and weight control, we fail to mention the most obvious answer: exercise! Consistent exercise can balance out and make up for the occasional high calorie fast food meal, while at the same time providing countless other health benefits. Exercise is the only path to quick weight loss that virtually every doctor in the world agrees upon. Exercise is safe, effective, and brings many more benefits to our lives than nutrition labels ever will alone. Exercise is fun, invigorating, motivating and the single most powerful way to improve our life and well-being. Reaching your ideal weight via a healthy and active lifestyle has been found to lower health risks and medical problems in 90 percent of overweight patients. In addition to the exercise benefits listed above, fit people are eight times less likely to die from cancer than the unfit, and 53 percent less likely to die from other diseases. Fit people are also eight times less likely to die from heart disease. Yes, nutrition labels are important insofar as we actually use them. But without a doubt, regular exercise is the most important piece of the puzzle and the best way to achieve rapid weight loss. Exercise is the safest way to achieve permanent fat loss, and when combined with a sound diet and nutrition program the body is turned into a virtual fat-burning furnace! Consumers would be wise to use the new tools from the fast food industry. Order the healthier items off the menu, pay attention to the nutritional labels, and above all else remember to participate in regular exercise. Business Cards for the Real Estate Entrepreneur

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Thomas McGiveron You would think that developing a business card would be easy. You put the name of the business, email, phone number, fax, website and whatever else you think is pertinent and/or applicable. Obviously, if you have no website or fax, well then chances are youre not going to include such itemsDuh. So, you sit down at your desk and jot down some ideas and before you know it, if you actually put some effort into it, you realize it is not as easy as you originally thought. Well, just like any other type of advertising, business cards take some thought for development. The first thing we struggled with was, Who is this business card for? This is a great question that requires follow up questions such as, Whos going to read them? and What purpose will they serve?. Once you establish the purpose of your business card, then you have to come up with things to say that speak to the people youre giving them to. The people you give your business cards to should probably be considered customers. You want your customers to be able to quickly see what you are all about. Think about the different people you may run into in your business travels. You may attend a chamber of commerce function and want to specifically market vendors or contractors of some kind. You may want to let them know youre provide contracting work that meets their investment goals. On the other hand, you may be driving neighborhoods and want to let people know you buy houses with no hassles. On a seperate day, you may want to visit some apartment complexes and drop some cards around that let people know you offer great deals on seller financed projects or lease options. You also may want to bring all these cards to investor meetings or chamber of commerce meetings to give everybody a taste of what youre all about! So is the answer, to have numerous business cards that represent all of your business interests to all different types of customers? Maybe, that depends on your focus which relies on the answers to the questions above. To save money you might consider making your cards double-sided. On one side of the card, you sell property and on the other, you buy property. There are also things to consider like if you want the card to be very professional and informative or very colorful like an advertisement. If you have a website, or plan to have one, its very important to include this on the card as well. Your website should be featured on just about everything you put out there for the public to see. Youll have options for what type of paper to have the cards printed on as well. Many businesses choose to use yellow cards with black lettering. This is prominent and stands out. Most are just white with whatever kind of letter color. If you know a graphic designer, you may choose to have them design one for you, put the predesigned card on a disc and bring this to the printer. The printer will like this, as it cuts down their time spent designing the card for you. The issue of price and which printer to use will be something to consider as well. Depending on your local area, Kinkos prices may be reasonable. We decided to use Minuteman Press. They charged us $95.00 for 1000 double-sided cards. We have color on one side and black and greys on the other, set against a white card. We designed them first, put them on a disc and gave it to them. They came out perfect. In our case, the content became the issue, as we put things on the cards that really didnt describe our business accurately. Thats our mistake. Now were not talking any type of illegal or false advertising, we just put things on the cards that we dont particularly like. What not to put on a business card: Titles. If youre just starting out and you started a Corp or LLC, you may consider yourself President or some variation, but this title is a hefty one to place on a business card. It implies that you have all the answers. If you do, well then thats great. But seeing as this is a site devoted to the noob investor, well then well just go ahead and guess that you aint all that just yet. So needless to say, something like, Tom Smith, Member should suffice. This accomplishes two important objectives. It implies that their is more than one person in your business - that can seem professional. Secondly, it lets you off the hook if you are at a function or just talking with a fellow investor who asks you a question you cant answer on the spot. As a member, you can say, Ill follow up on that with my partners. As President, this will not fly. Youll look incompetent. This is probably not a novel idea and may be discussed in many places, but we thought it pertinent to this article. The rest of what not to put on the card depends on your intentions for the card(s). The best thing to do is prepare your investment strategies first. Really narrow down what it is you want to do. So much goes into developing a business/investment strategy that business cards really should be low on the list of priorities. If you must have them right away. Keep them very simple. If your business will be real estate investment, then your name, company name (if you set one up already), some contact information and maybe something like, Real Estate Solutions or some variation will suffice. This keeps it broad enough so that if you decide to rehab and sell residential, or rent, buy foreclosures, flip, buy commercial, etcyou will have a card with general information on it. noobdogs.com www.Noobdogs.com offers a place for fellow new investors in real estate to answer questions and get good, sound information they can understand. www.Noobdogs.com is owned and operated by AmeriCountry Realty Group LLC. What Sort of Antiques Should You Collect?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Allison Thompson Antique collecting has now become one of the most competitive and exciting hobbies around the world. So if you are just starting out you are in for a real treat. However, do not take the decision of collecting antiques lightly; it will change your life. But first you need to choose the type of antiques you want to collect and then concentrate on it, carry out as much research as possible before you rush in to your first purchase. What ever you do dont do what some collectors have done where they have not chosen a niche item and just collect piles and piles of junk. What you really need to consider as well when choosing what you are going to collect is as follows:- Look at a period or time in history that has always held an interest for you? Next look to make sure that you can afford to purchase items in your chosen item, you may be fascinated say by rare art, but unfortunately it may be unaffordable. So pick an item that is affordable to you. But should you be collecting an item as an investor, and then it is good to invest in the best and highly recommended pricing guides that are available. Next will you be placing your collection on display or will then be kept in a safe place? Are you going to display for all the world to see or are you just purchasing as an investment for the future. Are you specifically collecting this item for a particular purpose, such as you wish to pass the collection on to your children or grandchildren, or great grandchildren or are they just to add decoration to a room. It is advisable to consider all these points before you begin your collection. What you should remember is choose what you want to collect, how you are going to collect it and in which way it will be displayed (if at all). 7 Steps to Cure Depression

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Richard Pettinger 1. Depression is often the result of negative thoughts that have been accumulating for several weeks or months. Often it may be related to an unpleasant experience such as the loss of a loved one. The first thing we should do is to try and disengage from our negative thoughts. Let go of the past and dont worry about the future try to concentrate on living in the here and now. 2. Try to talk about any problems or feeling of low self esteem with somebody who is a good listener. Often when we are able to talk about our depressed state of mind it is a relief, because we no longer feel so burdened. There is an old saying that a problem shared is a problem halved, definitely this saying has a lot of truth in it. Often the problem is that when we are depressed we dont feel like speaking to others, especially about our depression. But it is an important step and is well worth making the effort. It may be easier and more appropriate to speak with a trained counsellor rather than friends or family. It doesnt matter too much, it is fine to choose which ever you would be most comfortable with. 3. With depression often comes a feeling of lethargy and tiredness, but to do nothing can make depression more powerful. Again it requires a little effort but it is well worth trying to find more activities to do. These can have the effect of taking away the depression because your mind has something to distract it. 4. Physical Exercise. Studies show that taking moderate levels of physical exercise release chemicals which can promote a feeling of well being. For mild to medium forms of depression this can be most effective for dealing with depression. 5. Try to avoid feelings of Self-pity. When we are depressed it is easy to spend a lot of time feeling sorry with ourselves. It may sound a little harsh but this can become a self fulfilling prophecy. Try very hard not to continually follow this train of thoughts. Often we can most easily overcome depression by concentrating on something positive and good. We should feel depression is like a real poison we should always fight against. Sri Chinmoy suggests this: “The moment depression enters into your mind or vital, please feel that there is a heavy load on your shoulders. Then naturally you will try to get rid of it because you want to run the fastest.” 6. Try to give yourself goals. With depression comes frustration and de-motivation. In the beginning it is a very good idea to give yourself certain goals. This can be something quite simple like doing a certain amount of exercise per day or making an effort to stop negative thoughts. When you achieve these goals it will give you extra motivation and encouragement to keep trying to overcome depression. 7. Meditation can be a very effective way of stopping the negative thoughts, that are the root cause of depression. In meditation we learn to silence the mind and realise that our thoughts are not our real essence. Therefore we can find within ourselves our true state of mind, which is not depressed. Depression is a most painful experience never give up trying to overcome depression. Keep reminding yourself that depression can only be a temporary thing, no matter how serious the depression appears. Container Gardening Tips For Everyone

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Mary Hanna All of us, at one time or another, has seen a display of container gardens with flowers or vegetables at a friend’s home or in a nursery center. Many mistakenly think that it took a lot of effort or was done by professionals. That is far from the truth. Container gardens are just as easy as outside gardens and in some way s even easier to maintain. Anyone that loves to garden can plant and raise a container garden even those with limited space, even apartment dwellers. You can create a beautiful garden with just a few container gardening tips. Start out with a plan. You need to know what you are going to plant, a container garden flower or a container garden vegetable. You may want to concentrate on an herb container garden. It is important to know this so you can choose the right size container for the plants. The number one container gardening tip is to choose a pot that has sufficient space for soil and the plants. Vine type plants will need a large, deep pot to grow over. If you are planning on a large plant you will need a wide passed container for balance. Keep reading, there are more container gardening tips to come. One thing to keep in mind is that you must have adequate drainage in the container that you use. No plant likes to have “wet feet”. The type of soil you use in your container garden is an issue too. Most experts on container gardening tips say that you should use potting soil. While some gardeners have had success using the soil from their outside gardens, it is not recommended. Potting soil is preferred mainly because it will not compact letting more water to the root system over the growing season. Here it is important to do some research and plant like minded plants together. Your plant groupings should consider water needs, sun needs and fertilization needs. An essential container gardening tip is to pay attention to the plants watering needs. If you get a very hot streak and your container garden is outdoors on your patio you will need to water daily. If this is your first venture into container gardening, choose drought resistant plants. Plants in container gardens can’t reach out for other avenues of water supplies so it is up to you to make sure they don’t get thirsty. You will come to love your container garden but plants only last so long. If the plants you are growing in your container garden become less productive change them out. With container gardening you are the one to decide how your gardens will be in bloom. It is true that you can manipulate your plants by moving them around or taking them from the inside to the outside, or vice versa. There is one thing that you must be diligent about and that is pests. If you find a container that has an infestation, isolate and treat it immediately. Do not use harsh chemicals on the plants. If it is an indoor container garden the chemicals could harm pets or children. Here is a natural pesticide that will keep the bugs in check: In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests. Search online or at your local library for additional container gardening tips so that your beautiful container garden is a wild success. Once you have planted one container garden you will be anxious to start more. Happy Container Gardening! Copyright Mary Hanna, All Rights Reserved. Toenail Fungus - Treatment and Prevention

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christine_Dobrowolski,_DPM] Christine Dobrowolski, DPM A thick, yellowish nail with splotchy white areas is a classic presentation for a fungal toenail. In the early stages the toenail is only slightly discolored, or slightly thickened. In the late stages the nail can become very thick and has a tendency to “grow up” more than in grows out. The nail will be very discolored, typically dark yellow-brown and will start to change shape and crumble. In some cases the nail becomes very loose and many will lose the nail, only for it to regrow with the fungus. The medical term for toenail fungus is “onychomycosis,” pronounced on * EE * ko * my * ko * sis. The prevalence in America is about 2-3%, but some have reported it as high as 13%. Toenail fungus affects men twice as often as it affects women and the prevalence among elderly individuals and diabetics is 25%. In the 1800s, fungal toenails were very rare. The increased prevalence is linked to the increased exposure to fungus through the use of showering facilities in gyms, the use of hot tubs, saunas and public pool areas. There has also been an increase in the number of individuals participating in sporting activities and wearing occlusive footwear. More individuals have diabetes and there has been an overall increase in age of the general population, both of which are associated with a less than optimal immune system. It is no surprise that the risk factors for developing toenail fungus are increasing age, male gender, nail trauma, sweaty feet, poor circulation, poor hygiene, foot fungus and a compromised immune system. Athletes will also have a higher risk. There are a number of treatments for toenail fungus. The most aggressive and effective way to treat the fungus is with oral anti-fungal medications. The most common oral anti-fungal medications are Itraconazole (Sporonox ) and Terbinafine (Lamisil ). Both medications can be quite expensive as they need to be taken once daily for 3 months. The effectiveness of the medications ranges from 60 to 80%, with a recurrence rate of 15%. Lamisil appears to be more effective and has fewer drug interactions than Sporonox. With both medications there is a long list of benign side effects including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, rash, headache, taste disturbances and dizziness. Serious adverse events are very rare, less than 0.5%, but do include hepatitis and acute hepatic necrosis. There are many other options besides oral anti-fungal medications. Unfortunately, they are not very effective. The most effective topical medication is Ciclopirox (Penlac ) lacquer. Some studies have shown cure rates up to 60%, but in my experience the effectiveness is about 10-15%. Side effects occur in less than 2% of patients and include burning and redness around the nail. This medication is only available by prescription and is also quite expensive. A few other prescription medications that help decrease the thickness of the fungal nails are Carmol 40 and Keralac Nail Gel. You should not expect to see complete cures with these products, but they can decrease the thickness and discoloration of the nail in some cases. There are many home remedies and over the counter products that you can purchase. Some home remedies that can be used include bleach, tea tree oil, grapeseed extract, and Vics VapoRub. With any home remedy or non-prescription topical, you must understand that the effectiveness of the treatment is fairly low, less than 10%. If you do try one of these therapies make sure to use it every day. Roughen up the nail surface with a file and apply the medication with a q-tip. Bleach can cause skin irritation and some individuals have had skin reactions to the Vics VapoRub. In general these treatments are considered very safe. Combination therapy can help increase the effectiveness of the treatment. If you choose to take an oral medication, make sure you use a topical anti-fungal agent as well. Nail removal is also an option. Once the nail is removed, the topicals can reach the nail bed and they become more effective. The nail will grow back in over a period of 8-10 months. Permanent nail removal is reserved for those with chronic ingrown nails, ulceration under the nails or pain from the fungal nails. The best form of treatment is prevention and preventing the fungus from spreading to other toenails may be the best treatment option. I recommend choosing a topical that you feel comfortable with and use it once a week. No matter which treatment option you choose, you should take the following steps to avoid re-infection. 1. Place an anti-fungal powder or spray in the shoes to help fight off the fungus. 2. Make sure you rotate your shoes often and keep them in a cool dry place. 3. Change your insoles frequently, and make sure they dry out between use. 4. Bleach out the shower on a weekly basis. 5. Wash your shower mat regularly in hot water. 6. If you belong to a gym or health club, wear sandals in the locker room and don’t walk around barefoot. 7. Don’t keep your shoes in the gym locker where they cannot dry out. 8. Make sure your athletic shoes fit well to prevent jamming at the toes. Jamming at the toes leads to microtrauma at the nails and increases the chance for fungal infection. 9. If your feet sweat excessively, try using an antiperspirant spray on your feet before your workout. 10. Cut your toenails straight across. Don’t cut too short and cause breaks in the skin. This will increase the chance for fungal infection. Don’t let the toenails grow too long or they will jam against the shoe and cause bleeding under the nail, again increasing the chance for fungal infection. The bottom line is that prevention is easier than treatment. Treating toenail fungus is very difficult and will take months regardless of the type of treatment you choose. If you have fungal toenails that cause pressure, pain or infection, consider talking to your doctor about prescription medications or nail removal. If your fungal toenails are only unsightly and don’t cause any discomfort, consider topical therapy for treatment. The last option is to prevent the nails from becoming worse or becoming a problem. Try a weekly application of an over the counter topical along with methods to prevent re-infection.
