How to Extend Your Living Space Outdoors - Working with Color

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Malcolm Kay As suburban gardens become smaller, outdoor areas have evolved into more of an extension to our interior living space. Much more thought needs to be given to decorating the available space so that it becomes a totally integrated area. Colour in particular greatly affects our moods and changes the feeling of the space within which we relax, play and entertain. And for plant lovers, there’s a plant thats suitable for every colour scheme and every location. If you already have a dominant architectural or color theme indoors that brings you pleasure, try to extend this to the outdoor area so it becomes a natural extension of the indoor living area by using the same theme with cushions, pots, furniture or other decorative features. If you have a wooden floor adjacent to the outdoor patio or courtyard, you could extend the natural wood look to the outdoors constructing a wood deck with a similar colour lumber species. A simpler and quicker alternative if you have an existing concrete patio is to cover the area with interlocking wood deck tiles. These tiles can be simply laid over any existing concrete or wood surface and lock into place with inbuilt connecting tabs. Theres a range of wood species available so you should be able to find a color that comes close to your existing flooring (see for example http://www.swiftdek.com). And if you have ceramic or porcelain tiles indoors, theres now a range of similar interlocking tiles available with ceramic tiles on top which also comes in a variety of colours and styles. Both types of tiles can be laid by anyone without any experience in just an hour or so and are generally available in several patterns so you can choose a design which suits your situation best. Experiment by using neutral colours for walls, fencing and paving and then by changing decorative accessories and garden plantings, you can create a different look for each season until you’ve found what works the best and give the most pleasing result. Don’t overlook using textures in addition to colour, as contrasting textures play a very important role in a pleasing landscape design. Opportunities for experimenting with texture effects could include tables, chairs, pots, wall hangings, cushions, paving, plants and practically any decorative accessories. Foliage in particular offers a multitude of textures and interesting shapes. Choose plants with a theme in mind: are you creating a tropical wonderland, a place to sit in the sun and dream of holidays in Tuscany, or a stark modernist approach with grasses and cacti? But before rushing out and spending a fortune at the nursery, remember that each plant has specific requirements in terms of soil, sun, humidity, temperature and rainfall. If you can’t provide these, your plants simply won’t flourish. Consider how each plant will look in each season, especially the main season when you want to be using your exterior spaces the most. But remember, too much of anything, whether it’s patterns, textures or colours, can be confusing. Too much variety in small spaces can look excessively busy. And with plants, large groupings of just one or two varieties will usually create a much greater impact and look more balanced in a small area than a host of different plants with a riot of different colored flowers. Teacher Appreciation: 10 Creative Teacher Gift Ideas

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Cari Young Ten Creative Ways to Appreciate a Teacher When you have an exceptional teacher, you want to honor him or her in an extraordinary way. Anyone who has been teaching for a few years already has an extensive collection of assorted items decorated with apples. If you really appreciate your childs teacher, you want to go above and beyond the ordinary gift. Here are a few creative ideas. Words from the Heart: Many teachers say that the most precious gift they ever received was a heartfelt note from a parent about how the teacher impacted a childs life. This costs nothing but can be priceless to the teacher who receives it. Try to think of specific things the teacher said or did that helped your child to learn more or to become a better person. Put them in a handwritten letter and deliver it to your childs teacher.Scrapbooks: I have seen tough teachers cry when presented with a well-made scrapbook. Assemble pictures of each child, class parties and field trips. Collect thank you notes from each student, and put them together with the photos in a pre-made photo album or scrapbook. Not only can the teacher remember a special year, she can also share the scrapbook with her friends and family, to show them the significance of her work.Dinner: Do you think that your childs teacher is exhausted at the end of the day? Do you think that when she gets home, no matter how tired she is, her kids are asking whats for dinner, just like your kids do? Give a teacher a break with either a home-cooked meal or a restaurant gift certificate. Magazines: All teachers want to encourage students to read more. Often they stretch their own paycheck to buy books and other reading materials to have on hand for students who finish work early or need extra reading practice. There are many educational magazines that a teacher would love to receive for the classroom (Arthur, Ranger Rick, Kids Discover, or National Geographic Kids, to name a few). And this gift keeps giving for a whole school year.Treat a Day: Over the course of a week, put a small treat with a note in your teachers box each day. Shell have a surprise to look forward to each morning! Monday: a Payday candy bar with a note: Thought you could use an extra payday. Tuesday: Junior Mints, or any other mint candy with a note: You mint so much to us this year. Wednesday: A package of nuts with a note: Were nuts about our teacher. Thursday: Hersheys Hugs with a note: Hugs for our favorite teacher. Friday: A candle with a note: You have brightened our childs life. Shirts: This teacher gift will never collect dust because it will be worn again and again. For one day a week, your favorite teachers morning routine will go more quickly because she will not have to think about what to wear to school. Many companies make teacher shirts with colorful graphics and pro-teacher messages in a variety of styles and colors.Public Praise: The difficult work that teachers do often goes unnoticed and unappreciated. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper about the wonderful things that your favorite teacher does for his students. Not only will the teacher enjoy the letter (especially the copy you put in his box at school), but he will probably receive congratulations from others in your community who read the letter!Books: Almost every teacher loves books and reading. There are many types of books which make great teacher appreciation gifts: inspirational teacher books, picture books about special teachers, humorous school stories, and collections of poems about school. A teacher can look back on a gift book throughout the year when she needs encouragement on a tough day.World Changers: Many organizations sell gifts which can change the world. You can adopt a zoo animal or donate a chicken to a third world family, all in the name of your childs teacher. Often these organizations will provide certificates and newsletters to the teacher, adding educational value to a gift thats already heartwarming.Wild Ideas: For the teacher who has absolutely everything, try something wild and crazy to let him know how much you appreciate him. Put a bright pink flamingo in his front yard, with a sign around the flamingos neck saying: We were tickled pink to have Mr. Smith for a teacher this year. Wont that be a great Monday morning surprise? Skin Glands and Pores: Their Function and Importance in Maintaining Healthy Skin

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

By Danny Siegenthaler Brief overview of the skin’s functions The human skin is the largest organ of the human body and plays several vital roles including, protection, sensation, temperature regulation and communication. In addition, it is also capable of healing itself. I have discussed the anatomy and physiology of the skin in previous articles and will therefore focus on pores and their associated glands of the skin in this article. There are literally millions of pores covering the surface of our skin and these pores play a very important role in the overall function of the skin and the health of our bodies. Often these skin pores are referred to a sweat glands, however they are more than that. The microscopic anatomy of skin reflects this functional complexity, with each functional specialization implemented by particular features of cell and tissue structure. Structurally the skin is basically divided into two layers, the epidermis (outer skin) and the dermis (skin below the surface). The epidermis is the epithelial tissue layer of the skin and contains hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands, which originate in the dermis and protrude to the surface of the skin (the epidermis). Focusing on the pores of the skin, lets look at the Sweat Glands first. These glands are tubular and their secretory portion originates deep in the dermis. Secretions from these glands reach the skin’s surface via a duct that passes through the dermis and epidermis to the outermost layer of the skin. The secretory portion of sweat glands is comprised of larger cells than the duct. These cells form a simple cuboidal epithelium, along with interspersed myoepithelial cells, which can expel sweat by contraction. Cells lining the duct re-absorb certain elements from the fluid, secreted by the secretory portion of the sweat gland, as the fluid passes through the duct. This is primarily to conserve salt. Sweat glands play a primary role in the body’s temperature regulation by means of a process called evaporative cooling. There are two types of sweat glands, ordinary eccrine sweat glands found over most of the body and large apocrine sweat glands found in axillary, pubic, and perianal regions. Sebaceous Glands Sebaceous glands are part of the pilosebaceous apparatus, which consists of the sebaceous gland, the hair follicle and the hair shaft. Unlike all other glands, sebaceous glands are holocrine glands, which means they secrete whole cells. The secreted cells are dead by the time they reach the surface of the skin but whilst alive and on their way to the surface, they absorb lipids (triglycerides and free fatty acids, wax esters, squalene, and cholesterol) which are then secreted to the skin’s surface via the lumen (opening/pore) of the hair shaft. The secretion of sebaceous glands is referred to as sebum. Whilst most of the sebaceous glands are indeed associated with the pilosebaceous apparatus some glands open directly to the surface of the skin such, for example the Meibomian glands of the eyelids. Sebum secretion is under hormonal control and sebaceous gland development occurs during puberty. Blockage, or excessive build up of sebum can lead to acne which is of primary concern to many teenagers and can reoccur during mid-life as ‘adult acne’. As mentioned earlier, sebum is composed of triglycerides and free fatty acids, wax esters, squalene, and cholesterol. The secretion of sebum performs several functions. Firstly, the water-holding power of cornified epithelium depends on the presence of these lipids and secondly, sebum protects the skin against fungal and bacterial infections. This is sometimes referred to as the ‘Acid Mantel’ of the skin. As you can see, the secretions from the pores of the skin are in fact much more than mere sweat and serve some very important functions. The ‘Acid Mantel’ for example is a key immune defence of the body protecting the inside from the external environment and thus reducing the chance of infection. The Perfect String Quartet Repertoire for Your Wedding

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Warren Zielinski Here follows suggestions and tips that will help you determine the ideal programme for your Wedding day. A String Quartet can provide music for every stage of your Wedding. First of all, we have the Brides breakfast. If you are hiring the services of a String quartet for the whole day, you may be able to arrange for one or two of the players to come along for this early stage of the wedding at reasonable extra cost. A single string instrument, such as the cello, can provide gentle background music with Schubert’s Ave Maria or the solo suites by Bach. It is considered good form to invite the musicians to have a meal with your guests, especially if there is a long interval between wedding stages. Next follows the Prelude. This is the stage when your guests arrive at the actual venue where the ceremony will take place. This is often a different venue from where the Brides breakfast and / or Reception takes place. You should allow enough time for the musicians to arrive at the wedding venue before your guests! By this stage, the full quartet (all 4 players) will need to be on site for the main part of the ceremony, so it makes sense to take advantage of their presence and ask them to play for the Prelude as well. The Pachelbel Canon is an ideal piece of music for this purpose. As this stage is probably the longest (with exception of the reception), the quartet will need to have a substantial repertoire of peaceful arrival music in order to avoid repitition. Selections such as the Flower Duet from Delibe’s Lakme and The Swan by Camille Saint-Saens are perennial favourites. A good string quartet will be aware of these requirements, and should be able to assure you that their repertoire is varied, extensive and appropriate. Allow up to 30 minutes for this stage. Now comes the big moment of your Wedding day, the Processional (walking down the aisle!) This is when you’ll be very pleased that you hired a String Quartet. The actual music for the infamous ‘Here comes the bride’ is the Bridal Chorus by Richard Wagner. If your prospective ensemble doesn’t know this piece (and it’s proper title), walk away! They most likely will of course. If you have your heart set on something else, you must make sure that the quartet either already has it in their repertoire, or has the resources to acquire it. More obscure musical requests may need to be written specially for quartet. Arrangements of most show tunes etc. should be within the grasp of the quartet musicians themselves. You should however, expect to pay an additional fee for this service. A good arrangement takes time. The Signing of the register is the next stage of the Wedding which requires music. The Andante Cantabile by Tchaikovsky or Alexander Borodin’s Quartet no.2 are both very appropriate for this stage of the wedding, as they are relaxing and soothing pieces of music. Bach’s Air on the G string is also wonderfully effective. This allows everyone in the room to have a bit of a breather and will help to release any tension in the room! You should ensure that the quartet you have hired has the entire selection prepared, and not just excerpts, again to avoid endless repetition of ‘the famous bits’. That’s it, you’ve done it, you’re married! All that’s left for you to do is to walk back down the aisle, the Processional. Unless you have very strong feelings about an alternative piece of music, it is advisable to stick with the Wedding March by Felix Mendelssohn. Everybody expects to hear it, it suits the occasion perfectly and is a fantastic piece of music perfectly matched to the sound of the String Quartet. It’s party time! The reception follows the processional, and often takes place at a different location from the wedding ceremony. In order to ensure that the musicians arrive before the guests, it is advisable that you allow them to leave the ceremony immediately following the conclusion of the processional. There is a huge amount of very good Quartet repertoire which is suitable for a Wedding reception. It would be possible to satisfy the needs of your reception with the music of Mozart alone! Of course, an experienced quartet should have a balanced repertoire. Even so, It is worth checking that the musicians have certain pieces in their arsenal. Make sure that they have on hand all the well-known baroque and classical masterpieces by Mozart, Haydn and Handel, some light music classics, jazz standards, show tunes and arrangements of other popular songs. You should expect to hear Ein Kleine Nachtmusic (a little night-music) by Mozart, Boccherini’s Minuet and The ragtime music of Scott Joplin to name but a few. The Revenge of the Red Hot Mouse

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By John T Jones, Ph.D. I was reading the local Idaho rag this morning and learned that a New Mexico man had caught a mouse in his house. He decided he wanted it dead so he took it outside and threw it in to a pile of leaves he was burning. Thats when the fun began. The mouse took fire and immediately ran back into the house. He got into the intricacies of the house and spread the flame. The article said that the reporter talked to the man in a motel room. He said that no one was hurt but that he had lost his house and his furnishings. Well, we mustnt have this happen again, must we? This might be a good time to set up some rules for handling creatures that like to live with us in our houses during the wintertime. Never try to poison a mouse. We put one of those cute little yellow triangular boxes full of poison in a place where we knew our dog could never reach it. Somehow it got out from under a very low shelf beneath my work bench. My dog ate the stuff and he died a miserable death. My veterinarian son and two of his fellow vets could not save him. My son has a zillion stories about horses, dogs, cats and other creatures being poisoned by usually safe-to-use farm and household poisons. I think the mouse did not like my dog. He carefully nudged the little box of poison out from underneath my workbench with his nose so that my dog could reach it. This leads to a corollary: Remember that critters are smarter than humans. Put a metal grid over your chimney. Yesterday our rag had a story about a barn owl that got stuck in a ladys chimney. It took a while, but one of her family members got the bird out. When released, it flew right back into the barn. Im sure its spending the day there. Some year back in Colorado a bat flew down our chimney. Then with a little of my pestering, it flew around the living room scaring the heck out of everybody. After all, rats carry rabies. (My son had to take shots for rabies once after being bitten by a dog. In those days, the shots were given with a horse needle in the stomach. No fun!) Anyway, I finally caught the bat in a cloth and took it outside. It took off like a bat. I think it headed south for Carlsbad Caverns. Never try to get a skunk out from under your house with a long stick. Its best to call a professional in this case. I guess that would be the fire department where I live. Have you heard of a HAVAHART trap? They are handy for catching rabbits, raccoons, and other critters. You can read about how to use them at http://www.havahart.com/nuisance/_old_nuisance/troubleshooting.htm. These two tips might keep you from getting sprayed: If you want to trap your skunk get a small trap (1078 and 1088) so that it can not raise its tail. Use for bait Chicken entrails, cracknels, fish-canned (sardines) or fresh-insect larvae such as may beetles, crisp bacon, cat food, bread crust coated with peanut butter. Place a blanket over the trap after the skunk has taken the bait and the trap doors are locked. If you do get sprayed, the old remedy is tomato juice. Would you rather smell like skunk or the juice? Havahart has remedies which include tomato juice (http://www.havahart.com/nuisance/_old_skunks/skunk_solutions.htm). Skunk squirt is alkaline so acidic liquids like tomato juice and vinegar help. So whats next if you have a skunk in a trap under a blanket? Call the Humane Society. They just love to get rid of animals. Well, Im exhausted from the technology of this article. Well cover bears, wolves, and coyotes later. John T. When You Should Play The “Me Too” Game

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Charles Brown Sometimes your competitor will make a bold move and carve out a new niche, or repositions itself in a way that really threatens your own position. While it is always better to be first and to be the big fish in your own pond, life just doesnt always go our way. The other guys are smart too and come up with their own ideas. Thats why business can often be a game of keeping up. This is what happened to Ford and Daimler-Chrysler after General Motors came out with employee pricing as a way to stimulate car sales in the U.S. Until then, employee pricing had been a cherished benefit given only to employees. But when GM made this pricing structure available to everyone, a massive surge in new car buying began. And all of it was moving in the direction of GM. Ford and Daimler-Chrysler were faced with a dilemma. GM was taking all the new car sales for American-made cars away from them. Should they roll out their own employee pricing too and sacrifice their profit margins, or should they hold fast and wait until GM ended their program? It was a game of chicken on a corporate scale. What happened was what always happens in the car business, they copied GMs idea. They said, we have employee pricing too. Soon all three of the major American car makers were offering employee pricing. GM was no longer unique and no longer had the lions share of new car sales. All three companies benefited from the surge in new car buying, although GMs sales dipped somewhat from when they were the only one offering these low prices. Ford and Daimler turned what had been a unique selling proposition for GM into a category that benefited them all. Categories are funny things. There is still a leader of the pack, but categories enable all the players to benefit. They are rising tides that float all the boats. No one likes to play me too but sometimes it can be a very effective marketing strategy when your competitor has gotten the jump on you. When you look around and see that the other guy has carved out a niche and you cant afford to be left out, the me too game allows you to steal some of their thunder and profits. Beautiful and Personal Wedding Invitations

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Diane Winter When preparing for a wedding, wedding invitations are very important. This is the best and easiest way to get the word out that you are getting hitched and by including response cards, you will be able to get a head count. Since one of the biggest expenses at a wedding reception can be the food, it is extremely important that you have a head count. By getting out the wedding invitation in a timely manner, you have a good chance of knowing for sure who will be coming so that you can prepare accordingly. Another reason that wedding invitations are so helpful is because of the information that they give to guests. Typically the invitation will include not only the location of the ceremony, but also the parents of the couple, the date and time of the ceremony, and the location and time of the reception. Often people will enclose a response card with a stamped envelope to send back to the couple. This makes it easier for the couple to get a head count for the reception. Wedding invitations also provide information about the formality and theme of the wedding. The formality of the wedding is relayed based on how formal the wedding invitations are and the theme of the wedding is relayed based on the colors, style, descriptions, and any added graphics on the wedding invitations. Other things that people like to include in the wedding invitations are directions or maps to the ceremony and reception and information on where the couple is registered. By providing directions and maps people will find the places more easily and the couple doesnt have to worry about receiving phone calls from people who are lost. Including information on where you are registered is a huge help for guests bringing gifts. Many people arent sure what the couple still needs in terms of home dcor and kitchen products. Sometimes when information about registration isnt enclosed, guests will be driving from store to store to find the registry. So by including registry information, guests can easily find you something you truly need. There are so many different types of wedding invitations to choose from, allowing you to find the perfect ones to match your wedding theme. Many wedding supply stores have catalogues with wedding invitations from which to order the invitations. But if you are looking to save time and be able to search through hundreds of wedding invitations quickly, I suggest buying your wedding invitations online. There are a number of websites that sell invitations and have pictures of the invitation so you know exactly what they will look like. No matter which invitations you pick, make sure to send them out at least six weeks before the wedding date. That way you can give your guests plenty of time to respond and you will have a good idea of how many will be attending. Invitations are a great way to start the wedding on the right foot. For further information on wedding invitation tips and ideas on wedding invitations visit also http://www.weddinginvitationtips.com, a website that specializes in tips and ideas on creating your own wedding invitations.
